THE HONESTPET DIFFERENCE

Why Iowa Families Choose HonestPet for Their Dachshund

Buying a puppy online takes trust. Here's what you can count on when you work with us.

Raised in Breeders' Homes

A Dachshund raised in a kennel barn learns that every sound is a threat; one raised in a kitchen learns that most sounds are supper. Our breeders raise litters at home, around kids, the doorbell, and the dishwasher, so your puppy settles into an East Village apartment, a Waukee subdivision, or a farmhouse outside Pella without sounding the alarm at every neighbor.

Handled From Day Three

Our breeders begin Early Neurological Stimulation when puppies are three days old and follow Puppy Culture practices until they’re ready to join their new families. Short, gentle daily handling helps puppies become more comfortable with new experiences as they grow.

Health-Tested Parents

Most of our puppies’ parents are DNA tested. Each puppy’s listing identifies the DNA testing status of both mom and dad, so you can review this information before choosing your puppy.

Honest Puppy Matching

Smooth, longhaired, or wirehaired, we'll tell you which puppy fits your life, not just the one you first picked. A calm pup for a downtown Des Moines condo, a bolder one for a Johnston family with a fenced yard and a mole problem it would like solved.

A Guarantee in Writing

Every puppy comes with a 10-year genetic health guarantee and a digital copy of their vet and vaccine records.

Support for Life

Message our Care360 Team at 10 weeks or 10 years. We stay in touch with our families for the life of the dog.

STATEWIDE DELIVERY

Miniature Dachshund Puppies Delivered Anywhere in Iowa

Every HonestPet Dachshund comes from a vetted breeder who raises puppies at home, never a pet store or a broker. Iowa families choose free ground delivery to the door or a flight nanny who carries the puppy in the cabin to Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, or another nearby airport, and the drive is a reasonable one from most of our breeders.

ABOUT THE BREED

Why Miniature Dachshunds Make Great Iowa Family Dogs

A Miniature Dachshund is 11 pounds or less of loyalty, nerve, and nose. Bred to follow badgers underground, they're brave, stubborn, and funny, and they take an Iowa winter and a humid July in stride as long as there's a couch at the end of the day. Smooth coats want a sweater from November on; longhaired and wirehaired pups are a bit hardier, and all three will dig a yard if you let them.

Apartment-Friendly Size

Our Miniature Dachshunds finish between 8 and 11 pounds. That's under the pet limit in any Iowa apartment or HOA, small enough for an airline carrier, and light enough to carry across an icy driveway in January or onto the State Fair grounds in August, which spares their backs and your patience.

Three Coat Varieties

Smooth, longhaired, and wirehaired Dachshunds each have different grooming needs. All shed; choose a coat you can care for rather than expecting a hypoallergenic dog.

Thoughtful Family Play

Dachshunds can be affectionate family companions. Supervise play with children, teach gentle handling, and support their chest and hindquarters when lifting them to protect their long backs.

Patient, Consistent Training

Smart and independent, Dachshunds do best with short, consistent training sessions and positive reinforcement. Start early with potty routines and calm responses to hallway noises.

Moderate Energy

A Mini Dachshund needs two short walks and something to sniff, not a jog. On nice days they'll happily do a slow lap of Gray's Lake or nose around the Raccoon River dog park; in a January cold snap, a sweater, booties, and a quick loop are plenty. Fence the yard well, since a Dachshund will dig under one, and check for ticks after any time in tall grass.

Loyal Companions

Dachshunds bond closely with their people and enjoy being part of daily life. Build up time alone gradually, and arrange care and walks when you will be away for long stretches.

GETTING YOUR PUPPY HOME

Three Ways to Get Your Miniature Dachshund Home

Most Iowa families take free ground delivery straight to the front door. If you'd rather fly, a flight nanny can bring your Dachshund in the cabin to one of five airports serving Iowa, carrier under the seat. Either way, our team sets the date with you and sends updates from departure until the puppy is home.

Most Popular

Ground Transport

Ground delivery suits Dachshunds, and Iowa is a reasonable drive. A snug crate in a climate-controlled vehicle is a den dog's happy place, and most sleep along I-80 or I-35 with a stretch-and-potty stop or two. Puppies arrive at your door rather than an airport curb.

Pick Up at the Breeder

Want to meet your puppy first? When the breeder's location and schedule line up, HonestPet can set up an in-person visit before your Dachshund heads to Iowa.

Flight Nanny

A flat $799 to any airport we serve for Iowa. Your puppy rides in the cabin in a soft carrier at the nanny's feet, never in cargo, so the winter cold-weather embargoes airlines place on checked pets don't apply. The nanny hands your puppy to you at arrivals.

Not sure which option fits? Send us a message and we'll help you sort it out.

HEALTH FIRST

Miniature Dachshund Health and Parent Screening

Dachshunds have their own health considerations, especially their long backs. We’re working toward having all of our breeders complete screening relevant to their breed. Testing varies by parent; ask to review available results for the parents of any puppy you’re considering, and talk with your vet about ongoing care.

Parents & puppies

Back and Spine Health

Ask about the parents’ back-health history and discuss Dachshund spine care with your vet. Keeping your dog lean, using ramps, and limiting jumping can help protect their back; a screening result is not a guarantee against future back problems.

Parents

Eye Health

Ask which eye examinations or genetic testing results are available for the parents of your puppy. Results and screening coverage vary by parent, so review the individual records rather than assuming every dog has had the same tests.

Parents & puppies

Knees and Mobility

Ask about any available veterinary findings for the parents’ knees and movement. Your own vet can check your puppy’s gait and joints and help you choose exercise that suits their short legs and long back.

Parents

Heart Health

Review any available heart-screening records with our team and your vet. Parent results vary; ask what was checked, when it was checked, and what the findings mean for the puppy you are considering.

Puppies

Dental Care

Small dogs need regular dental care. Ask your vet about your puppy’s teeth and bite, and introduce gentle tooth brushing early. Ongoing dental care remains important after the puppy’s first exam.

Parents

Parent Health Records

Each puppy’s listing identifies the DNA testing status of both mom and dad. Ask to review the available parent health and genetic records before reserving a puppy; testing is not identical across every breeder or parent.

Puppies

Vet Exam

Every puppy headed to Iowa gets a complete exam from a licensed vet before departure: heart and lungs, eyes, ears, teeth, and skin, plus a careful look at the spine, hips, and gait in a breed with a back this long. The vet issues a health certificate for interstate travel, and the exam goes into the puppy's digital records for your Iowa vet.

Puppies

Shots, Deworming, Microchip

Each puppy is current on core vaccines for their age and dewormed on a regular schedule since their first weeks. Your vet will finish the series, including the rabies shot Iowa requires by 6 months and most vets give around 3 to 4, start tick and heartworm prevention since both are common here, and talk you through Dachshund back care: keep them lean, add a ramp to the couch, and carry them on stairs. Every puppy is microchipped, and we'll help you register the chip in your name.

QUESTIONS ANSWERED

Miniature Dachshund Puppy FAQs

Yes. Most families choose free ground delivery to their door. Yes. Smooth, longhaired, and wirehaired Dachshunds all shed, and their grooming needs differ. No dog is fully hypoallergenic. If allergies are a concern, talk with our team about the individual puppy and coat type before deciding.

Miniature Dachshunds weigh 11 pounds or less fully grown. Our Miniature Dachshunds typically finish between 8 and 11 pounds; review the individual puppy’s estimated adult size with our team.

Your puppy comes home with a starter bag of food, a blanket that smells like their littermates, a toy, microchip details, and a digital copy of their vet and vaccine records.

Pick an available puppy then send us an inquiry. After we talk, a $349 deposit holds your puppy. The balance is due before go-home day.

Parent testing varies by breeder and by dog. Review the available DNA testing status and health records for the puppy’s mom and dad with our team. Every puppy receives a veterinary exam, age-appropriate vaccinations, deworming, and a microchip before going home; your vet can help you plan ongoing Dachshund back and joint care.

Each breeder may have a different preferred puppy food, so we provide the specific brand and formula your puppy is currently eating to help make the transition to your home as smooth as possible. If you decide to switch foods, we recommend transitioning gradually to help avoid digestive upset.

Our puppies go home at 8 weeks old.

IOWA QUESTIONS

Getting a Miniature Dachshund in Iowa: Your Questions Answered

The questions Iowa Dachshund families ask most, from how we differ from the state's kennels to city licensing, digging, and airport pickups.

Legally, yes. Iowa has no statewide ban on pet store puppy sales, and a 2017 state preemption law keeps cities from passing their own. Because Iowa is also one of the largest commercial-breeding states in the country, store Dachshunds here often come from very large kennels nearby. What a store can't show you is the mother, the home, or the breeder's health testing. HonestPet is not a pet store. We connect Iowa families directly with vetted breeders who raise Dachshunds in their homes and share all of that up front.

Both, with a note for each. In a downtown Des Moines apartment or an East Village loft, Minis are small, clean, and under any weight limit, but they bark at hallway noise unless trained early. In a Waukee yard, they're busy and happy, but they dig, so check the fence line, and their backs don't love deck stairs, so add a ramp. Either way they'll end the day under a blanket.

It depends on the city. There's no statewide dog license in Iowa, but Des Moines, West Des Moines, Ankeny, Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Davenport, and most other cities issue their own and want a current rabies certificate first. Statewide, every dog must be vaccinated against rabies by 6 months. Your city clerk or animal control page lists fees, which run lower for spayed and neutered dogs.

Once your Dachshund is reserved, HonestPet schedules the trip from the breeder's home to yours. The puppy gets a final vet check and a travel health certificate, then rides to Iowa in a climate-controlled delivery vehicle or in the cabin with a flight nanny to the airport nearest you. We confirm the timing with you and send updates along the way.

Flights into Iowa are short, about 1 to 2 hours, depending on the breeder's location and which airport you choose. Your Dachshund stays in a carrier at the nanny's feet the entire time and never flies as cargo.

In some cases, yes. When the breeder's location and schedule allow, HonestPet can arrange a visit so you can meet your puppy, and often the parents, before delivery. Because our breeders are in different areas and we protect their privacy, visits are arranged individually rather than offered as drop-in appointments.
